What Is Love?
In the Bible, we are told of the nature and character of love.
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.
It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.
Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.
It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.
For we know in part and we prophesy in part,
but when perfection comes, the imperfect disappears.1 Cor. 13:4–7 KJV
How would the world have been if these love-characteristics were exemplified by us? Truly, a number of good things would have happened.
So, why is there a need for us to love another, or for us to love ourselves?
a) To Exhibit the Final Responsibility or Purpose of Man
The final “purpose” of man here is to exemplify the highest “character” of God, which is love.
Now, since love is the character of God, it diminishes your chances of going to hell (where there is no love), and increases your chances of being with God (who is the God of heaven). Heaven fully accepts those whose daily characters are like God’s.
So then, while heaven is always attracting its kind, hell is equally doing the same.
This suggests that the earth will become like heaven (very perfect), because all that we purposely display is love—towards ourselves and towards one another. Then hell (troubles) will lose.
Therefore, loving ourselves and loving God was made a command in the Bible.
“The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord:
And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.
And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.”
— Mark 12:29–31, KJV
If this was the first character God gave to man, then it suggests that this is what the universe was made for.
b) Love Brings “Peace” Upon the Earth
Peace heals the world. A man will refrain from wronging his fellow human being if he truly loves that person. Neither will he hit him, nor speak wrongly of him, nor destroy him.
Hatred is what causes these things and ultimately ruins the world.
c) Love Psychologically Heals the Soul
Finally, love heals your soul and the souls of others.
Every character is an energy, whether good or bad. As you demonstrate negative character toward yourself or toward others, negative energies—emotional, psychological, and even biological—are released, which can ruin the flesh and the soul.
Love, however, is positive. It is healing. It covers your “container” and heals your body.
Love has healing potencies that bring freedom and long life.
You will have long life (eternal life) if your character is filled with love, just like God’s.
Conclusion
In short, loving ourselves is the single determining factor for the earth’s development. When there is love on earth—displayed by us—there cannot be energies of death and fear in the world.
